Caregivers and Family MembersI want you to know that you are perhaps the most critical part of your loved one's support before/during/after an amputation. A great deal more in the way of support is available in the form of peer networks, support groups such as this one, and loads of written information. Interestingly, we at Tropical Amps are getting a lot more requests from caregivers lately than we are getting directly from amputees. It is very important for you to try and involve the amputee in this peer support process for it to be most effective. But of course, not until such time as they are ready to get involved. If you the caregiver is wishing to find support for yourself during a difficult part of learning to live with and assist a new amputee, we can help you locate a "family support" specialist. Such a person is really just someone like you who perhaps a bit earlier, has had to also deal with a loved one losing a limb. As a final note, I'd like to invite you to join our mailing list so that you will get notified of upcoming group activities. Perhaps the person that you are caring for is unsure of wanting to join us. give them a little time and maybe we'll get to meet them soon in the future. Be strong! |
